Frequently Asked Questions

Short answers to what comes up most. For the full walkthrough, see the User Guide.

Getting started

Do I need to create a humidor before adding cigars?

No, but it helps. Cigars added without one still count toward your collection; they just won't appear under a humidor. You can file them later using Move on the humidor screen.

What's the difference between a cigar and a lot?

A cigar is the blend — “Oliva Serie V Melanio”. A lot is a specific batch of it that you bought, with its own count, price and resting date. One cigar can have several lots.

Do I have to use lots?

No. Set a quantity on the cigar and get on with your life — that's tracked as loose stock and works fine. Lots exist for when you want per-box resting times and cost per stick.

Is my data stored on someone else's server?

Your collection lives on your device. The AI scanner sends the photo you take for identification; nothing else leaves your phone.

Counts, lots and aging

I have a box and some singles of the same cigar. How do I track both?

Add a lot for the box, and either add a second lot for the singles or leave them as loose stock. Both appear under the cigar with separate counts and resting times, and they can live in different humidors.

I added a box and my existing count disappeared — did I lose it?

You shouldn't. Adding a lot never touches loose stock; the two are counted separately and added together. If a number looks wrong, open the cigar and check the lots list — the total is the sum of every lot plus anything loose.

Does the aging clock stop when I open the box?

No. It runs continuously from the resting date to today. Opening a box, smoking one, or moving it between humidors doesn't reset or pause anything.

What date should I use for resting?

The day it went into your humidor. It defaults to today, which is right for something you just bought — change it when you're entering an older box. If you genuinely don't remember, a rough guess beats leaving it at today.

What does “sealed” actually do?

It marks a box you haven't opened, and pushes that lot to the back of the queue when you smoke something — so the app draws from open stock first. It doesn't stop you choosing it deliberately.

When I smoke one, which lot does it come out of?

By default the oldest open lot. You can pick a different one from the drop-down when you log the smoke.

I deleted a lot. What happened to the count?

The cigar's total recalculates immediately from the lots that remain. Deleting a lot removes those sticks from your collection, so only do it for a purchase you recorded by mistake — if you smoked them, log the smokes instead.

What are the 1YR+ and 2YR+ badges?

Milestone markers that appear once a lot crosses a year boundary, so long-resting stock stands out at a glance.

My box size isn't in the list. Can I add it?

Yes. Settings → Packaging, type a name and a quantity, and tap Add — a 4-count Coffin, a 50-count Cabinet, whatever you actually buy. It appears in the packaging picker from then on, tagged custom so you can tell it apart from the sizes that shipped with the app.

Humidors

Can one cigar live in two humidors?

Yes. Set the humidor on each lot rather than on the cigar. Lots without a humidor of their own follow the cigar; lots with one override it.

Why does my humidor say “over capacity”?

You have more sticks in it than the capacity you set. Either you've genuinely overfilled it or the capacity needs raising — edit the humidor and change the number.

What's the difference between Move and smoking one?

Move relocates cigars between humidors and keeps the count. Logging a smoke removes one from your collection. Never use Move for something you smoked.

Can I track a travel case or a cooler?

Yes — make it a humidor. Anywhere you keep cigars qualifies, and giving the travel case its own entry is the easiest way to know what you took with you.

Humidity sensors

Which sensors work?

Govee H5075 and H5074 Bluetooth hygrometers.

Do I need a Govee account or an API key?

No. Ash Tag listens to what the sensor already broadcasts over Bluetooth. No account, no Wi-Fi, no cloud.

Why don't readings update when the app is closed?

iOS doesn't permit this kind of Bluetooth scanning in the background. Readings refresh whenever the app is open and showing them. The trade-off is that it costs you almost no battery.

My sensor shows a different temperature than the Govee app.

Usually one of the two is showing an older reading. Ash Tag reads the sensor's live broadcast; the Govee app may be showing a cached value from the last time it synced. Humidity — the number that matters for cigars — should agree closely.

How close does the sensor need to be?

Around 30 feet, less through a thick cabinet door or a metal cooler. If a reading goes stale, range is the first thing to check.

Can I put more than one sensor in a humidor?

Yes — useful in a large cabinet where the top and bottom shelves differ.

Scanning & photos

How do I get the best scan results?

Bands facing up, good even light, and don't crowd the frame. A single layer of a box reads better than a deep pile.

The scan got the cigar right but the size wrong.

That's expected — a band tells the model the blend, not the vitola. Confirm the size and format yourself on the results screen before saving.

Where do the cigar photos come from, and can I change them?

Ash Tag looks up a product photo automatically and marks auto-picked images with a small badge. Edit the cigar and choose your own photo to replace it; the badge goes away once the image is yours.

Is scanning included?

No — it's part of the AI Pack subscription. Manual entry, lots, humidors, sensors and reviews all work without it.

Data

How do I back up my collection?

Settings → Data Management → Export Data writes a CSV you can save or send to yourself. Do this before any large import.

Can I import from a spreadsheet?

Yes, as CSV, from the same screen. Export first so you have a file in the right shape to work from.

What does archiving do?

Removes a cigar from your in-stock list while keeping its reviews and history. Use it for something you've finished rather than deleting it.
